poster

So far today I have done a rough sketch and a more defined sketch on what the poster will look like. I’m planning on maybe adding some cuts/signs of abuse onto the horse to show that it’s not just a regular horse book, that it’s a book that is about the hidden abuse in horse sports. I only want one design for the poster as i have to get on and do the pictures inside the book as well as figure out what image I want a my front cover. Here is what I have for the poster so far…Capture.PNG

I want to make a more realistic approach to the poster and the front cover as they’ll both be the main attraction, the art inside the book on the other hand will be more simplistic so you can actually see where and how the abuse causes harm to the horse. Once I’ve done all the art I will need to select mini sections from each category to minimise the text so it wont put off the reader.

Homework

Contributing to a narrative can go any way possible as that’s usually the case 40% of the time. The first most important start to a narrative is a location. The majorette of movies and TV shows always take place in a house or recognised neighbourhood. 50% of the time a movie will pan into a house, a example of TV shows that do this are… American dad, Friends, Family guy, Simpsons, Easterners, Hollyoaks. Some don’t start in a house, the rate that it will however is very high.

You cant have a narration without the second element. That element is character. You’ll be introduced to the main character, along side this you’ll be introduced to the characters love interest, family, friends or even the villan with their sidekick. Seeing the character can go many different ways, you either hear what they sound like or see what they look like before one or the other. You see the main character ( or hero ) in a particular outfit. An example to use of this is Peter Parker from spider man comics is a bright red, blue, black and white. That’s what we see him as most recognisable. Each and every character has their own unequal fashion choice and voice as well as quirky catch lines like Sheldonds’ ‘Bazinga!’

The last but not least one more important part is that you have to have some kind of scenario, this is called action. The most prime example with action has to be any DC or Marvel film. There is always a reason to be fighting, may that be a family crisis, a apocalypse, a war or even a kidnapping. Anything that fits into that section is movie and tv show ready.

The four theorists all had a different idea on the three elements. Tzvetan Tdorovs view on the elements were seen as linear but circular.  The narrative is driven by the characters attempt to restore the equilibrium. He had five stages on the narrative progress, compared to Vladimir propps seven. The folks tales helped him propose ways of grouping the characters and actions into one type, this is also known as the ‘Spheres of Action’ These are the different roles that are given out, such as the hero, villan, princess helper etc. Roland Barthes gave five codes of narrative. The enigma, the action, the image, the subtext and the cultural influence. With all of these amazing people, their ideas eventually came into one over time thus creating the three rules of narrative. Tzvetan Tdorov as Action, Roland Barthes as Location, and Vladimir Propp as character. There is one man left, that is Levi-Strauss, his theory is that the conflict is based around the binary opposites and that the binary opposites are the central climax of a narrative structure.

For my FMP there aren’t alot of theories to it. There are the elements. The location is mostly a stable or a competition area. The character I will be focusing on is the horse and people around it, The horse is the victim, the villans are the people that abuse these horses and we are the heroes. The location will be a bit problematic for my final hard draft as it’s a book. The Action here doesn’t have an ending ans this’ll never be stopped until its recognised. The action is a huge part within the three elements of my FMP that wont be solved like the rest of the actions that we see, and this wont likely have a great ending.

Interview preparation

Later on today I will be interviewing Erin, she’s a friend of mine that knows a lot about my FMP subject. This can help me out a lot as if there are any facts that I’ve missed out she will be able to give me the facts that I need. We will be calling at about 1:30 PM, until then I can write out my survey that I can post hopefully tomorrow!

The art that’s going to be done will have to be delayed until the interview is recorded and edited along with the survey done as the art is my last priority. I’m extremely glad that I managed to finish my presentation board yesterday, it’s given me a lot of help and time to reflect and Make sure everything I need to going to be done or is already done.

Narrative

Tzvetan Tdorov

Tdorov suggests there are five stages to how the narrative progress:

1- The equilibrium has to be carefully shown ( to ensure the disruption is dramatic enough enough to create a strong plot)

2- There is disruption.

3- There is recognition that the disruption has happened.

4- There is an attempt to repair the damage done by the disruption.

5- A new equilibrium is achieved.

Here the narrative is not seen as linear but circular. The narrative is driven by the character’ attempts to restore the equilibrium, although the end result is not quite the same as the beginning.

Vladimir Propp

Propp studied folks tales and he proposed ways of grouping the characters and their actions into eight broad character types  of ‘Spheres of Action’ Character may occupy more than one sphere of action.

1- The Villain

2- The Hero

3- The Donor

4- The Helper

5- The Princess

6- The Father

7- The False Hero

Levi-Strauss

Levi-Strauss introduced the notion of binary oppositions as a useful way to consider the production of meaning within narratives. He argued that all construction of meaning was dependant, to some degree, on those oppositions. Polar opposites. Death and Life, Love and hate, Good and bad.

Roland Barthes

Roland Barthes suggests five codes of narrative:

1- The hermeneutic code ( the enigma)

2- The proairetic ( the action )

3- The semic code ( the images )

4- The symbolic code ( the subtext )

5- The referential code ( the cultural influence )

3 elements.

Location, Character, Action. Use the three elements in my homework.

Practical Presentation board

We have around 5 weeks left to do our FMP. During this time something that has really helped me with seeing what I’ve done to what I haven’t done in a orderly fashion. This board has helped me see what I need to get doing and/or needs to be complete.

For today’s task we had to create a presentation board on our final project that explains what we have done and haven’t done and what needs improving on. On the left hand side we had to write down our project so far so what we’ve done may that be practical or written work.

On the middle for the left hand side was ‘what I did during Easter’, even though what I did for the Easter wasn’t a lot in my opinion  but it was enough to plan out my week. Right next to it in the middle was the ‘what to do next’. Knowing what to do next is always a struggle as that’s when your plans come into action. Now I know what I need to do today to get myself in the working spirit.

Finally on the right hand side we have the overall look and main focus. This is morally for seeing where I am currently. Things i need to improve on and do today.

This board really does help knowing with what I need to do, like today I need to do sketch the other art pieces that’ll go inside the books with each chapter matching the art. I will also need to write down the the back cover on what its about and create a survey. This starter has really helped me know what needs doing or checking over.Image-41.png

Horse racing abuse research

The world on horse racing can be a very controversial thing to talk about. However, we cannot let this go un-noticed anymore. Horses DO die on track. These are caused by either over working them or after going over a jump falling and either breaking or twisting their legs or part of body, half the time the horses take a really rough fall to the floor, mess of tangled limbs, fractured bones and broken spikes, all of these things is enough for a horse to either be put on retirement or even shot and “put down”. When horses do die or are injured the jockeys see the horses as replaceable. These horses to jockeys are just something to ride to win a race. Just like any other sport, drugging is involved. This is extremely illegal, these drugs can be to make them work a lot harder just like they way steroids do but the majorette of the drugs are to mask any type of injury, so instead of the resting or getting treatment they will carry on running like nothing is wrong, trainers can be banned from ever entering again as well as the jockey as they may or may not know of what the horse has taken or been given. When horses are too old for racing or stop performing well enough to get a win or a medal they’re often sent to slaughter. Thousands of horses from the industry are killed in the UK alone every year and often turned to dog food or cheap meat. We all know The Grand nationals. It’s the most deadliest course in the world, it has a total of 16 jumps, they’re required to run 4mi, 4f (7,242). This track has racked up many fatalities. Having 40 skidish horses makes accidents of all sorts including pile ups.  It’s only the horses that pay for their lives. The jockeys do abuse their horses, they strike the horse- mostly at the end of the race, this causes pain and suffering to the horses. Horses are made to learn how to race at a young age. Now this can cause to affect the to the growth of the horses and get them to cause injuries and really its not surprising. ALL of this is for money, they horse gets nothing out of this but recognition from the public. There is very limited things we can do , turning your backs on the sport or simply protesting is the only way to go, protesting isn’t a great idea but turning your back on the sport and letting people know how they really treat these horses and that it’s not worth it, hopefully they’ll turn their back on the sport as well.

Small detailed research + planning

In this Blog I’ll be doing all these things listed to make sure I’m not missing anything out.

  1. prop list
  2. character list
  3. story board
  4. age rating
  5. risk assessment
  6. camera angles

Prop List

  1. table
  2. 4 chairs
  3. laptop
  4. camera
  5. clip-on mics

Character List

As I have real people they would be counted more as Models really.

Izzy, Alfie, Betti, Marie and Myself.

Story boardImage-40.png

Age Demographic.

because of the subject matter it can be hard to take in all of the truth of abuse that these horses endure. For this reason only i recommend that anyone from the ages 13+ would be interested and able to watch in a respectable matter.

Risk Assessment

Camera Angle

Because this is more of a reaction interview we will need to be able to see their faces the whole time the camera angles will be very basic. Just the Wide shot and a couple of close up shots, I can edit this when the interview is done to give it more affect.

Proposal update

Where my FMP stands currently is just all on paper, all in my blogs. Mostly planning, research and mood boards with a dash of my cover art. Everything is a little all over the place but once i get on a scheduled I should be fine. Since the beginning my FMP has changed a lot. I want to get my interview done by the end of the week but I really don’t feel like that’s possible because of the list of things that I need to do that need a lot more attention than the interview. I would like to see if one of my friends could do a digital interview as they know a lot about my FMP’s subject matter and she’ll be perfect to explain it all better and give some insight. With the two weeks we have off I would like to possibly do a poster and I’ll need to start on the better ways section for each chapter that I talk about. As I personally don’t ride a horse all my information will be coming from my friend that I’ll be interviewing and google. I have high hopes for my FMP and I really hope it comes out alright.

Final Name and Covers choices

I have finally found a name for my final project and name of my book finally. Image-39.pngImage-38.png

Two options that i need a vote on what one i should use as a final cover so I can illustrate  it. Otherwise I’m stuck between the two. I may decide to make another option during the week and Easter holidays but for the meantime what I have currently is perfectly fine.
