FMP evaluation

 Research and Planning

I feel my ideas have been developed but ever so slightly as my ideas have stayed the same, as it goes for the focus yes, that has changed as I never had one in the beginning. I originally was going to do a person but as I looked back over my work from the years, I have been here I decided to go back to my first-year idea, the idea of horses and how we only see them as beautiful and to ride.

I think I could have done more to reference and research as it was all more or less laid out for me, and I took that as an opportunity to get ahead of the game and see what I could do with this material. Although as time went by, I realized I needed a lot more material and references to achieve what I wanted.

I mostly investigated abuse movements, I looked at the various abuse of horses such as over feeding, not feeding, mental abuse as well as physical etc., I cannot really say an awful lot of movements have inspired me throughout this course.

My ideas have developed ever so slightly, mostly throughout drawing it. I had a lot of ideas that would have looked great but cluttered, so I removed them and stuck to what I wanted to achieve, once I’ve got my mind set onto something it is hard for me to shake off any original ideas or new ones, but sometimes you have just got to say no to them.

I think I have done well searching for my theme ideas (such as mood board), they gave me a lot of inspiration to be weird and creepy with what I wanted to do, I looked at them when I was lost and thought what I can do, what can I add to this to make it look like this. This was a strong hold for me.

I wished I were not so lazy on researching on how to practice drawing things such as the guts, I really struggled on these as I did not want them to be too plain or too over detailed as its not meant to be, but I do regret not doing more research, overestimated my ability.

Evaluating my Final Piece

I used digital art, it is simply a case of screenshot and store it for the process after, otherwise I did not really use any videography techniques.

I wanted to convey violence in my FMP, and it was successful. I want people to see horses as more as just their coat and being majestic and beautiful, I made them as lovely as I could and completely ruined them by making them suffer in the image I had done. To know most horses only know is suffering I wanted to make it clear, we use them like objects and to me a carousel is a perfect representation of it.

I really like my FMP, I think I done an excellent job at everything overall, I really could have done so much better on the background but really my focus was the horses and making them look as detailed as I could, make everything stand out and to make sure only important parts were really done well. I could have done better on the decoration on the horse as it was rushed, I will say but regardless of it still fits and looks incredibly beautiful.

There really is not anything I would change on this, if I really had to pick, I would say trying out a different decoration set would have been quite fun to do as the possibilities are infinite.

Final Evaluation

For my FMP, my theme and ideas stayed the same. Since I started planning, I knew it wanted it to be glitchcore gore just not what my main subject would be. Among playing around to gather research for my moldboard I thought back to my year 11 exam piece, a horse on a carousel. In my first year of college, I had done my FMP about horse abuse, this all made me think how I can make my current FMP stand out from my last ones, the only thought in my head was to make it as gory as possible. I felt wonderfully comfortable with this as I love making things look out of the ordinary and just disturbing.

I would not say any artist inspired me as really, I just went back on what I have done before, so I guess in hindsight I inspired myself, as while I was doing my piece, I had a 1 to 1 with my tutor and she mentioned about it being a message, I thought this was a clever idea so I based it around people using horses only for their looks and their ability and once they have what they need, they just chuck them aside like trash. I tried to make the horses and uniform- Just everything look beautiful as I could so the first thing you see (aside the gore) will be the horse, the patterns, and the decoration. I truly hope that the message is clear, it might take longer to see but the message is there and clear.

I was digital for my FMP, however for my practice and experimenting I did some pencil, acrylic, and watercolor work to see what works better with glitch core/glitch and let us just say I did not enjoy any of them, however I really enjoyed experimenting.

My outcome matched my results As I did not really change an awful lot apart from find a main subject and execute it.

To improve I really could have researched a lot more on how to do glitch within my pain program and resources I had to my disposal, but I did not. This sucked the life out of me because it was a gore piece, I had to get into the mind set to draw it as if you go into something with a negative motion while trying to do a positive piece, it just turns out lop sided. I really could have put more time into making everything look more realistic but as they say, less is sometimes more and I do tend to overdo things.

One last planning step

Now im approaching the end of planning for my fmp I feel like now is a good time to wrap things up. I know I want to only do one main focus, the background is going to be very minimalistic, the gore as well as shading will be very detailed on the main focus. I cant wait to finally get started and really let myself make something so majestic be so horrendous and such a statement piece, I’m thinking of adding text when I’m done but I’m not yet sure what it’ll say, I recon it’ll come in once its done and I’m looking at it. I intend to post progression pictures throughout making this piece to note what I didn’t like, how its going etc.

Glitch work on paint tool sai

while looking for a tutorial on how to make a glitch affect i found this tutorial and this is what i want to do, this is something im going to follow and see what i can do with it.

This is the tutorial i followed: [Tutorial Speedpaint] Glitch effect on Paint Tool Sai – YouTube
I found this really helpful as its given me some short cuts to use when doing my last piece and making it glitch. To experiment i done this work on another random finished piece i have in my folders so i can try and get the full effect like this tutorial.

I would say its quite easy to do, i would need to do more to make it look glitchy but with the fmp piece i feel like that’ll be the perfect time to do a quick experiment so i can get into the feel of it and know where is right to glitch and where isnt as well as the colours.

A slight change of plan

After a lot of thought ive decided to only do one horse on the carousel! I want to put as much detail into the horse and make sure the detail of the muscle, blood, bone and glitch core. I’ll be using the main pose 1 that was in my previous post. I have made a bunch of adjustments and made it more to how I want to actually do it.

All that’s left for me to do is place where the gore will go with a red pen and make sure the guts are in place as well as the uniform design, if I want it worn and tattered or really pretty so that when you really look you can see the horrible detail behind and start thinking. All that’s left for me to keep track of is time and if i can get everything on the list done.

Progression is key!

So today I wanted to get what I want to do down and so far ive got once sketch that I’m going to improve on and change. I took this reference from my work that I put in a mood board for primary research. I want to improve the body proportions as it had really been sometime since ive drawn a horse let alone for an fmp. I would like to do two more horses and once I figure out the placement I will start sketching out the actual carousel and the lighting / what the design will be.

Carousel image research

All thats left for me to do is find a theme thatll work well together along side the glitchcore theme.

I would really like to make the whole data part of this piece as a statement, glitch a real horse in the fake horses place as if they’re just objects for us to use instead of living breathing animals.

Progression

Way back in school I did a similar topic for my exam, I still have the image and art that I did for it so I might use that as a reference point and perhaps carry it over and see if I can mix the two themes together. For my next practical piece i would love to work on doing a headshot to see if i can get a rough idea on where the pole will be going and if i can change anything and get the gore right before diving into the full body piece.
