Final Piece

This is how my final piece has turned out. I’ve made some changes to how everything was going to turn out, some extra little bits. I tried to make both look lifeless with no light to shine, scratching the idea of slightly painted as i’m just not confident enough to slightly paint. Even so, I feel like the message was clear enough. originally I wasn’t going to add any extra ( bruising and blood ) but I decided I wanted to add the realism to this or as much as I could.

My goal with this piece was to try and get people to see that men get abused as well and its not just women. I was confused on what to putt in the background but really, just a black background looks good and gives the looming sense a good feel, the quote “no one will believe you” came to my mind while doing the eye bruising. I did have other quote ideas but none really made the piece, with this it made the whole piece just click into place.

The research I leading up to this was a real game changer, one is every six men have been are are currently being sexually assaulted or even abused , that the majorette would rather stay silent and suffer alone then get help as it damages their image or injures their masculinity from the years of pressure put on them for having to always be the bigger person and many etc.

Overall I do really like how it turned out, I feel the message is clear enough without needing an awful lot of writing a simple quote and a clear message that can hopefully catch an eye.

Final sketch summary

So far this is what I have for my final piece. As this is just the sketch before I decide to add anything, I want to annotate it so far on things I like and don’t like and somethings I can improve on.

For a start I like the concept and the idea. I feel like the image is there, although it seems more like kidnapping more than anything. I do want to add quotes that people say to man victims or just any man that has had something happen to them. All in little quotation bubbles from the woman, I did have the option to do a man behind, but I want people to know it’s not just men attacking men and women but it’s also women attacking men and women. I want people to see men are just as frail as women at times- not to say all women are frail, women are strong and have been told to be their own women but when it comes to men, it’s to be expected all the time to be strong and independent and always be the dominant one when really, some just don’t want to be.

I know for a fact I don’t like the hands. I really need to fix them and make it look more human, as now the right hand looks horrid, it’s a mess, I guess the left one can get away with it, but I want this to be good. I want the hands to look like a hand. Everything else I can work on, its literally just the hands I don’t like, maybe fix the face on the man and have the ears and nose to be at the same level and looks a tad better.

I want to make the skin not ‘painted’ but detailed enough to see all the redness and bruising. When I get back ill find a way to paint over barely where the scratches and bruising will be, as well as fix the hands, that’ll probably take me the most time as it’s just not my strong point.

Interview

asked people what their views are / opinion are of sexual assault / abuse that happens to men.

M, Fletcher Prescott,18. Happens more often than you would think, but due to the modern social norms is usually not reported by the individual on the receiving end due to stigma of it making them less masculine.

M, Sam Sitch,18.  Had pretty much the same thing in my head. It’s an absolute pisstake when its confirmed and nothing happens because men must “suck it up”

F, North, 18. My opinion is its not as recognized among people as it should be, I think its horrendous that people think women and men should be treated differently based on certain circumstances as time goes on people have been striving for gender equality.

I think it should be spoken about more, there are multiple cases in which women are let off too easily for situations that if the roles were reversed and the man was abusive its end up with life changing punishment to fit the crime.

Both men and women can abuse a person mentally or physically, wether it be hitting them, degrading or alienating them in society.

It’s just a shame that people can be ignorant when it comes to things they think as abnormal.

F, Angela Higham, 59. My views on sexual assault are it’s the worst act of violence you can do to someone else, either male or female. What happens to men is just as bad as if its a woman, no different.

Research

In incidents of sexual violence reported to the National Crime Victimization Survey, 38 percent of victims were men––a figure much higher than in prior surveys.

This was in 2016, 4 years ago. Obviously, the figure has gone up since then, I’ll be looking for another article that’s more recent to see and compare the percentages of assault victims.

After pooling and analyzing the data gathered in the years 2010 through 2013, the authors found female perpetrators acting without male co-perpetrators were reported in 28 percent of rape or sexual assault incidents involving male victims and 4.1 percent of incidents with female victims.  Female perpetrator was reported in 34.7 percent of incidents with male victims and 4.2 percent of incidents with female victims.

This here is the most up to date source I could find, this is in the US from 2000-2018. I can’t find anywhere that’s up to date as this for the UK.

Researchers have found that at least 1 in 6 men have experienced sexual abuse or assault, whether in childhood or as adults. And this is probably a low estimate, since it doesn’t include noncontact experiences, which can also have lasting negative effects. If you’ve had such an experience, or think you might have, you are not alone.

Having such an experience does not mean a boy will suffer significant long-term negative consequences. That depends on several factors, including how many times it happened, how long it went on, who else was involved, whether the boy told anyone and, if so, the response he received.

This is probably the ONLY source I’ve seen that is dedicated to the men, and I highly recommend reading more and use this a lot more in my research.

L3 Art and Design Project Proposal

Rationale – So far, I know that sexual assault within men is 50% less than women. Its only half but it’s still there, it exists. Men are sexualized to how women / men like them to be, a simple jokingly sexual comment towards a men can either be positive or negative, there’s no guarantee that they’ll be commutable with it, the same goes for women. I know I can put my digital skills to use and create something visually appealing and can catch an eye. Maybe something quickly animated or a simple bust piece can send more chills than slogan ever can. I really want this to work, men shouldn’t feel ashamed to talk about things like this.

Project concept- I already have a rough idea on what I want to do.

I want to try and do something along the lines of assault / harassment awareness in men, I feel like it’s something that needs to be spoken out more. Everyone knows women get assaulted all the time and it’s something women think men won’t understand when really, they’re sexualized, manipulated and half the time raped because of their image as a man.

“you’re a man” “doesn’t happen to men” “man up”, all of these things I want to wipe away, no man should have to feel like they need to protect their pride or masculinity.

Now I have a clear motive in mind, I need to do research on this as well as experiment with different forms of medium. I know I’ll be doing digital as it’s something I can do so much with.

I’ll be going to interview some men I know about this and see how they feel about it, I’ll have to voice record it and type it up so I can get their full input. So far, I’ve not thought about the questions or lay out, I’ve just merely scratched the surface with my project.

Evaluation – Throughout this I would love to interview both men and women on sexual assault and harassment that happen to men to get their views on it. I’ll also be asking older and younger people to see the views on both ends of the stick instead of just one end as this could really impact everything.

Research sources I will be looking at throughout:

I won’t be doing a colander, Instead I’ll be doing a check list.

1- Research about the subject

2-Look up common sayings that are said to men

3-Explore different mediums

4-Interview men (young and old)

5-Interview women (young and old)

6-Research how many men sexually assault men

7-Research how many women sexually assault men

8-Sketch out an idea digitally
