Contributing to a narrative can go any way possible as that’s usually the case 40% of the time. The first most important start to a narrative is a location. The majorette of movies and TV shows always take place in a house or recognised neighbourhood. 50% of the time a movie will pan into a house, a example of TV shows that do this are… American dad, Friends, Family guy, Simpsons, Easterners, Hollyoaks. Some don’t start in a house, the rate that it will however is very high.
You cant have a narration without the second element. That element is character. You’ll be introduced to the main character, along side this you’ll be introduced to the characters love interest, family, friends or even the villan with their sidekick. Seeing the character can go many different ways, you either hear what they sound like or see what they look like before one or the other. You see the main character ( or hero ) in a particular outfit. An example to use of this is Peter Parker from spider man comics is a bright red, blue, black and white. That’s what we see him as most recognisable. Each and every character has their own unequal fashion choice and voice as well as quirky catch lines like Sheldonds’ ‘Bazinga!’
The last but not least one more important part is that you have to have some kind of scenario, this is called action. The most prime example with action has to be any DC or Marvel film. There is always a reason to be fighting, may that be a family crisis, a apocalypse, a war or even a kidnapping. Anything that fits into that section is movie and tv show ready.
The four theorists all had a different idea on the three elements. Tzvetan Tdorovs view on the elements were seen as linear but circular. The narrative is driven by the characters attempt to restore the equilibrium. He had five stages on the narrative progress, compared to Vladimir propps seven. The folks tales helped him propose ways of grouping the characters and actions into one type, this is also known as the ‘Spheres of Action’ These are the different roles that are given out, such as the hero, villan, princess helper etc. Roland Barthes gave five codes of narrative. The enigma, the action, the image, the subtext and the cultural influence. With all of these amazing people, their ideas eventually came into one over time thus creating the three rules of narrative. Tzvetan Tdorov as Action, Roland Barthes as Location, and Vladimir Propp as character. There is one man left, that is Levi-Strauss, his theory is that the conflict is based around the binary opposites and that the binary opposites are the central climax of a narrative structure.
For my FMP there aren’t alot of theories to it. There are the elements. The location is mostly a stable or a competition area. The character I will be focusing on is the horse and people around it, The horse is the victim, the villans are the people that abuse these horses and we are the heroes. The location will be a bit problematic for my final hard draft as it’s a book. The Action here doesn’t have an ending ans this’ll never be stopped until its recognised. The action is a huge part within the three elements of my FMP that wont be solved like the rest of the actions that we see, and this wont likely have a great ending.
